A Journey into Western Academia

Juggling two languages, I've come to believe that each language is unique to their possessors and the uniqueness of a language often goes with untranslatableness hand in hand. So, to avoid losing its message in translation, I just leave it as it is 学无止境术有乾坤 - a Chinese proverb chosen as my motto for 2017.

Sugar = high carbohydrate diet produces insulin resistance + high glucose levels - damage every organ in the body

To sum up 1) learning 2) moving - aerobic is the best of all (keep breathing) 3) sleep 4) diet (calories restriction) 5) reduce stress

The Mughals came from the centre of Asia. The Mughal Empire began in 1526 with the 1st Emperor Babur - the descendant of Genghis Khan, and ended in 1858.

The ruler Akbar began a campaign for religious tolerance: eliminated taxes that discriminated against Hindus, banned the enslavement of captives taken in war, and married into royal Hindu families.

The Taj Mahal, a tomb situated in Agra in India, is a complex of gardens, mosques, and minarets constructed as a tribute to Shah Jehan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

two narratives commonly emergy in answer to the qustion (This account obviously contains some truth/partial truth). The first focuses on the struggle between democracy and its alternative, pitting liberals against fascism, National Socialism, and Marxist-Leninism. The second focuses on competition between capitalism and its alternatives, pitting liberals against socialist and communists. Democratic capitalism is simply the best, indeed the 'natural' form of societal organization, these stories assert, and once Western Europe fully embraced it, all was well.
In practice, a willingness to use political power to protect citizens from the ravages of untrammeled markets. The ideology that triumphed was not liberalism, as the 'End of History' folks would have it, it was social democacy.

The Australian Working Class

In its develoment, the Australian working class has exhibited many of the contradictory features that characterised the ... in Name of a country in the . century. during the first decades of the .., the labouring population consisted overwhelmingly of convicts. With the expansion of the pastoral industry and large-scale assisted immigration of Britain's urban poor to Australia from the early 1830s, convict labour declined significantly in the economic life of the Australian colonies.
Rather an the peasant farmer of Europe or the independent smallholder of the United States, from the very early stages the typical rural dweller in Australia was an itinerant wage worker.

Focus on your objectives (research) not on grades or coursework. During the first two years, find an advisor, pick a research area, read a lot of papers and try small, exploratory research projects; other than those are distractions!
Aim at 50 to 150 papers by the end of the third year, directed toward an eventual thesis, to defend the novelty of a proposed thesis. Two types: try to learn (non-required classes outside one's focus) too much thereby wasting time; go too far with the related search, reading so much about the intended area of research that one never starts that research = 'eternal' students (lack of goal-making a small but significant contribution to human knowledge).
Writing a paper is an iterative process: start with an outline and some rough notes; take a pass over the paper and improve it a little; rinse; repeat. 'Good enough' is better than 'perfect' as perfectionism is a tragic affliction in academia. Often, one who can't begin to write until having the perfect structure of the paper mapped out will never get started.
Do research not to learn.
Two stages of the dynamic: Early on, get help from the advisor on crafting early paper (doling out specific topic); when s knows more than the advisor, she needs to go rogue and start choosing the topic to investigate and initiating the paper write-ups when she is capable of selecting and attacking research problems of appropriate size and scope.
A monastic experience requiring biblical levels of devotion (even comes with bulit-in vows of poverty and obedience), read, write and solve problems on days, nights and weekends. It's not a 9 to 5 work or school.
Maintain contact with committee members in the latter years of .. (they are not an everyday presence like an advisor but they are the ones to sign off on your..
Treat it as a training process not aim too low or too high.

theory: what and why? There's no clear 'right' or 'wrong' theory in this context. The theories that inform social policy are not like natural scientific theories which can be tested. Some social theories might be better than others at helping us to understand social realities; theories may differ in how much light they throw on vairous social phenomena. How is poverty measured in Canada?

Canada has no offical, government-mandated poverty line. A general agreement: low-income + other dimensions of 'social exclusion' (access to adequate housing, essential goods and services, health and well-being and community participation)
poverty measurements are generally defined in either absolute terms (inability to meet basic needs) or in relative terms (distance from the community norm)
three measures frequently mentioned in poverty literature include: the low-income cut-off (LICO), low-income measure (LIM) (the most commonly used explicitly defined as being much worse off than average), market-basket measure (MBM) . There're pros and cons associated with each of these measures

Report on an Investigation of the Peasant Movement in Hunan (Mao Zedong 1927)

The importantce of the peasant problem: the field study on the five counties of Hunan province demostrates the revolutionary authorities had wrong ideas about peasant movement. These wrong ideas should be corrected as soon as it could be as the power of peasant will rise like a mighty storm that nothing will be able to hold it back. The peasant will sweep all the imperialists, warlords, corrupt officians, local tyrants and evil gentry into their graves.
get organised: went through two periods of organisation and almost half the peasants in Hunan are now joined in peasant associations.
Knock down with the local tyrants and evil gentry! 'All power to the peasant associations!' a slogan of peasant associations. The main targets of attack by the peasants are the local tyrants, the evil gentry and the lawless landlords, also against bad practices and customs in the rural areas.
'It's terrible!" or 'It's fine!' 'Terrible' is obviously a theory for combating the rise of the peasants in the interests of the landlord class for preserving the old order of feudalism, obviously a counter-revolutionary theory. Peasants are doing absolutely fine. The revolution of 1911 did not bring about any change in countryside.
the questions of 'going too far', it's an opinion of the middle-of-the-roaders, a criticism to the peasant associations. It's nessary to create terror for a while in every rural area.
the 'movement of the riffraff' , those of lowest rank are now above everybody else running everything in the viliage.
vanguards of the revolution: three categories of peasants: the rich, the middle and the poor and the last category has alwasy been the main force in the bitter fight in the countryside.

Intro:

meat (fat) was socially/culturaly presitigious food in the past; it's now associated with ill health.

Early diets

Paleolithic Period (preagricultural humans): the typical diet of the Paleolithic period estimatedly consisted of 50% plant-based foods and 50% foods of animal origin.
The agricultural and industrial revolution: (the collective human genome has changed little since the period when Homo sapiens began to flourish, but the food supply has changed dramatically) During this period with the development of modern food-processing techniques became widely available in place of whole grains and begetables. With all the changes in food supply there was also a shift back toward the sonsumption of animal protein.

The changing food supply

--- tai chi: rooted in ancient Asian traditions, qi is yr vital energy. When qi freely flows, we'r balanced and healthy. Tai chi promotes the flow of qi.

--- headache: three main types of .. tension, migraine, and cluster. Here is a look at each one.
a) the most common type of .. is tension which produces a dull, squeezing pain on both sides of the head. It can last 30mins to 7 days. the cause of it is unknown, triggers include stress, fatigue, & lack of sleep --> pain relievers over-the-counter, or a warm shower, a nap, or a light snack.
b) the pain often is centred on one side of the head, beginning around the eye and temple and spreading to the back of the head --> loud noises, a bright light, strong smells
c) cluster headaches strike 5 times more often in men than in women.
d) a sinus infection can cause pain over the forehead
e) brain freezes headaches caused by eating or drinking sth cold
f) strenuous exercise can sometimes trigger a headache.

--- different types of arthritis can result in swollen hands and swollen fingers in the morning. These include osteoarthritis (cartilage), rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune disorder), cervical spondylosis (cervical spine in the neck area; age-related)
